Summer beauty tips for you – Abc Local Web
Getting beach-ready can be a process, from makeup that won’t melt to hair that can withstand the heat and humidity. And don’t forget the hair removal!
We’ve rounded up some of the newest and hottest beauty trends that are quick and easy, and best of all, won’t scorch your wallet.
EYELASH TINTING
Tinting enhances lashes for at least a month for just $15.
“It’s great for summertime, swimming at the beach. There’s no runoff,” says Anthony Guerrera.
At his skin care lounge, Anthony lathers the lashes with a henna dye “just like you are applying mascara,” he says.
After three minutes, he wipes it away, leaving thicker, darker lashes
“It’s a big pop when the tint is applied,” he says. “It just soaks up the color.”
“Oh they look great!” said Emily Ruthforth. Isn’t that amazing? I asked her. “It is. Completely,” she said.
Amazing because Emily says her blonde lashes are typically transparent.
“Without mascara they are pretty minimal,” she said. “You can’t see the ends or anything. With this, you can!”
HAIR TREATMENT
“The humidity makes it frizzy and I can’t do anything with it!” said Nancy.
If you’re like Nancy and your hair expands in the thick and sticky summer air, why not beat the heat with a quick and easy frizz-fighting treatment.
“Your hair is silky and smooth and shiny for 4 to 6 weeks,” said Carolyn Barrett of Dina Alon Salon.
Dina Alon offers Keratin Express, a faster and gentler version of the popular hair treatment since it is 99 percent formaldehyde free!
“It’s the safest version in the keratin arena,” said Carolyn. “You just comb it through.”
It sinks in for just 20 minutes, and after a quick wash and blow dry the straightening agents are locked in with the sealing heat of a flat iron.
“It will knock the blow dry time in half!” said Carolyn.
It costs $100 a la carte, or $50 with a hair cut or color. Nancy told us she is ready to battle the beach!
“Ooohhh it feels great! It feels like silk!”
HAIR REMOVAL
While we’re talking hair, your warm weather wardrobe usually requires removing some.
“Sugar is what we use to remove hair,” said Twana Harris of Total Serenity Day Spa.
Yes, sugar! Like the granules you use to sweeten your coffee.
“Sugaring is a hair removal technique that was developed in the early 1800s in the middle east,” said Twana.
Twana says unlike regular old wax, sugar rips the hair right from the root.
“If you are having any issues with bumps or irritation, this would be great,” she said.
An equally sweet-sounding solution to summer ready skin?
“We call it candy wax here because it looks like candy!” Twana said. “You apply it, and then it dries and then we just peel it off!
You feel nothing – just a tiny pinch. That is it.
ADD SHIMMER
Now that your skin is smooth, spray on a shine fit for a night of summer fun with a shimmer elixir.
“It gives the clients a red carpet glow, that nice sheen look,” said Julie Dorenbos of Skin Palette.
For $10 the airbrush artists at Skin Palette add a botanical-rich hydrating treatment.
“It gives you that nice hydrated feel so your skin will look dewy, but it doesn’t feel sticky or wet,” said Julie.
“It’s not a sparkle, it’s more of a shimmer and a sheen!” Alison told us.
“The treatment itself doesn’t add any extra color boost,” said Julie.
But it highlights the shade of your own skin for a full day and tends to show up better on deeper tones.
“It gives my skin a little enhancement! And this feels so soft!” said Alison.
The Shimmer Exlixir is great for brides and girls heading out to a special event this summer.
And these treatments are not just for the ladies. Guys can take advantage of the sugaring and hard candy wax it is LESS painful, trust me.

-
Remove Nail Polish Without Remover
If you run out of nail polish remover, you can remove cracked or chipped nail polish by applying a clear top coat to the nail and removing it promptly with a cotton ball. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Stop Taking Supplements
It’s true the healthier you are, the healthier your skin and hair will be. But popping supplements without discussing them with your doctor can do more harm than good. Why? Because mixing certain vitamins and minerals can have the opposite effect of what you’re hoping. Talk to your doc before popping any pills. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Avoid Overly Rosy Cheeks
Giving yourself a natural glow avec blush is an in look for spring. But you’ll want to avoid brushing on too much (lest you look like a clown). So always start your blush line two finger widths away from your nose and only apply it on the apples of your cheeks. This will ensure you create a natural glow without going overboard. -
Banish Oil
The fastest way to clear your skin of any oily breakout, especially in the summer, is to use blotting papers. They’ll clean up the excess oil on your epidermis and will prevent breakouts. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Nix Post-Shaving Redness
Shave your face, legs or underarms in the shower after standing under warm water for a few minutes. This will help open up hair follicles and will soften hairs so they’re less coarse to shave. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Give Hair Lift
Before you start blow drying your hair, add a volumizing spray to your roots. This will give your locks some added lift. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Find Your Shade
When choosing a foundation, test a product on the skin near your jawline. And be sure to do it in natural light. This will ensure the foundation tone you choose for your face isn’t too different from the natural shade of your neck. Credit: Shutterstock
-
You Can Use Exfoliator Daily
Exfoliation is an important and easy way to buff away the dead skin cells that cover up your skin’s natural glow. Use a light exfoliator, like the Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica, to freshen your face daily. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Give Curls Bounce
Never brush curls out with a brush. Instead, loosen them with your fingers. This will give curls added lift without flattening them down. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Don’t Believe Beauty Labels
Some beauty labels actually display false information, so don’t believe everything you read. If a product promises instant results or all-day protection, it may be too good to be true. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Create Fuller Lips
If you’re sick of having thin, pursed puckers, extend your lip line using a neutral-toned lip liner. Then apply lipstick over top. Be careful though — don’t extend your lip line too much. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Stop Your Hair Colour From Fading
If you’ve just had your hair dyed, the last thing you want is for the colour to fade. One surefire way to prevent such a mishap from happening? Use a deep-conditioning treatment once a month. This will help lock in colour and has the added benefit of staving off dry and damaged locks. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Apply Mascara To Fake Lashes
This will help fake lashes blend in a bit more seamlessly with your natural ones. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Treat Ingrown Hairs
Apply a product containing azulene or witch hazel to help reduce the swelling and redness that’s associated with ingrown hairs. From there, coax the ingrown hair from its location with a pair of tweezers (don’t pull it out, though — this will only make the ingrown hair regrow in in the same way later). Credit: Shutterstock
-
Cut Back On Pedicures
Save money on your beauty routine by taking care of your feet on a daily basis. Simply scrub your foot with a pumice stone each morning in the shower. Once you step out and dry off, apply a moisture cream to your feet. This will increase the amount of time you can go without a pedicure and will keep your toes healthy and fungus-free. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Using Eyeshadow Primer
Primer is a great tool that will help you lock your makeup look in place. But adding too much of it on areas of your face where you won’t actually apply colour will actually detract from the look you’re going for (mostly because primers are brighter in tone than most makeup shades). Credit: Shutterstock
-
Soften Skin
Immediately after stepping out of a shower, pool or lake/ocean, apply some sort of cream to skin. Water washes away the skin’s natural oils and applying moisture cream will prevent skin chapping. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Clarify Your Hair
In order to remove product build-up from locks, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This will also help prevent dandruff and other annoying hair/scalp conditions. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Eye Cream Is Great For Cuticles
Instead of spending money on cuticle cream, you can use extra-moisturizing and hydrating eye cream to cure dry cuticles. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Apply Bronzer Evenly
Before applying bronzer or self-tanning lotion, mix a drop or two of the solution with moisture cream. Blend using your finger or a Q-tip then apply to skin as you would regular moisturizer. This will ensure the cream blends in — and covers skin — evenly. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Hide Split Ends
To make split ends less noticeable, apply a heavy hair repair cream to lock in moisture before and after using a flat iron or a blow-dryer. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Change It Up
Our skin craves different things depending on the time of year. So change up your beauty routine based on the seasons. In the winter, add more moisturizing creams to your daily beauty list. In summer, ensure you’re using lots of SPF. Credit: Shutterstock

If You Have Greasy Hair…
Avoid applying conditioner directly to your hair’s roots — just apply the heavy moisturizing cream to your locks’ ends. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Use Oil On Your Skin.. Even If It’s Already Oily
This probably sounds crazy, but using an oil-based product to remove makeup or excess dirt from your skin can actually improve your epidermis’ condition. Why? Over-cleaning stimulates the sebum glands, which causes skin to over-produce oil. Using oil-based products will have the opposite effect. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Nix Flaky Mascara
One of the main reasons mascara will flake onto your face after you apply it is because it’s old. Opt for a new container and always remember to keep your mascara tube tightly sealed. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Dry Out Pimples
Believe it or not, dabbing toothpaste onto a pimple is a quick and easy way to dry it out. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Add Oomph To Cheekbones
To make your cheekbones appear higher and to give them more structure, apply bronzer directly under the cheekbone. You can also add highlighter to the cheekbone itself (under a thin layer of blush). Credit: Shutterstock
-
Clean Your Makeup Tools
Whether you use a razor, a Q-tip or a powder brush, make sure to clean your beauty tools. After even a couple uses, they become breeding grounds for bacteria, which can cause breakouts, eczema and many other skin conditions. Credit: Shutterstock
-
Replace Old Products Regularly
The effectiveness of products — not to mention the amount of bacteria they breed — wares after only a few months. Ditch old items and replace them with new ones. Credit: Shutterstock

Essence Hands Out Black Beauty Awards – New York Times Blogs
Essence magazine handed out its first Best in Black Beauty Awards on May 8, honoring what it called innovators in cosmetics, skin care, nails and hair. The event, at the Dream Downtown hotel in New York City, drew a fashionable crowd of beauty industry veterans, style editors, celebrity makeup artists and hairstylists.
The honorees included Ted Gibson, a noted hair stylist; Pat McGrath, a makeup artist; and Lisa Logan, a manicurist. The event was hosted by Essence’s beauty director, Corynne Corbett, and June Ambrose, a stylist and host of VH1’s “Styled by June.”
Mikki Taylor, the magazine’s trailblazing beauty director for 30 years until she retired in 2010, was also present. ”I had goosebumps the entire time,” she said. For decades Essence offered beauty tips for African American women that were not available in other women’s magazines, including advice on hair relaxers and deep tone concealers.
Among the first to arrive was Ursula Stephens, a hair stylist who transformed Rihanna’s medium-length locks into a bob. “Essence is the stamp of approval for black beauty,” Ms. Stephens said, who wore a mustard-colored bandage skirt, a peplum blouse and sky-high platform pumps.
Mr. Gibson, who has been lobbying for an Academy Award category for hair styling, was thrilled by the honor. “To be recognized by the leading black publication in the world, it means something,” he said. Janelle Monáe presented his award, and gushed about Mr. Gibson’s work. ” Whenever Ted did my hair, I knew I was in good hands,” said Ms. Monáe, who wore a shiny black tuxedo with her signature red lipstick and up-do.
Style veterans and trendsetters weren’t the only ones being celebrated. Balanda Atis and Janine Cherette, color cosmetic scientists from the L’Oreal USA Research and Innovation team, also won awards. The two spent seven years interviewing thousands of women of color worldwide, and used their feedback to expand foundation shades. As a result of their research, Lancôme added new shades to the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H Foundation.
After the speeches, guests networked at a cocktail party and were invited to create their own gift bags from the winning products. That’s when the real fun started.
Fergie got best beauty tips from mom – New Kerala
Los Angeles, May 15 : Singer Fergie says it was her mother, Theresa Ann, who taught her how to get an extra glow out of her face with just a little mascara and blusher.
“I learned that a little bit of colour on your cheeks and some mascara on your lashes would brighten up a face instantly,” femalefirst quoted her as saying.
The singer is a global beauty ambassador for make-up line Wet n Wild and her signature line of products will hit stores in September.
She says her mother always presents herself immaculately, and can’t live without the company’s brand of eye shadows.
“It’s always been Wet n Wild’s eye shadows because they have always had the most colours. She loves how the colours match so well with all of her outfits and her moods,” she added.
However, Fergie does not pay as much attention to her own looks.
“I am so much lazier than she is about that,” she said. (IANS)

Stop aging in its tracks: beauty tips to try today – Abc Local Web
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – As we age, our skin begins to sag, under eye circles become more apparent, our faces can look tired, even when we’re not.
Like most women approaching 40, Kelly Steinhorn wants to looks as young as she can for as long as she can.
“You live once. It’s not a dress rehearsal. I try to look the best that I can look,” Steinhorn explained.
What is her biggest complaint?
“I have dark circles under my eyes which make you look tired,” Steinhorn explained.
To turn back the clock, cosmetic surgeon Craig Vander Kolk at Mercy Medical Center says to look for a skin care cream with retinoic acid to help produce collagen.
“Retin-A allows you to get products inside and it carries in, into the deeper layers,” Vander Kolk told Action News.
You can also try some natural ways like Pycnogenol. A recent study shows supplementing with 75 milligrams of the pine bark extract a day for 12 weeks increased production of a compound that makes your skin smooth by 44%.
Take a cue from Popeye and eat spinach! The lutein in four ounces of the green stuff can boost skin elasticity by 38 percent. Finally, spinach isn’t the only go to food. Research shows eating fruits and vegetables will get your skin glowing better than a suntan can. Try eating more veggies like tomatoes and carrots.
Also, don’t forget the sunscreen! It should be applied to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, even in the winter!
